My mum looks away in disgust when she sees what we bought!

Trindle was originally a ships life boat. She had no engine and was powered only by oars. We don't know what ship she belonged to, but a lot of ships were broken up in Hammond Lane breakers in Dublin, and the life boats along with anything of value was sold off. It is probable that the previous owner the late Mr Wheelan bought her from Hammond Lane. He subsequently cut a well in her stern and fitted an outboard engine into the well. This well was to prove very troublesome later on.

Sadly when Mr Whelan died Trindle lay at her moorings at Lowtown, in Co. Kildare like a fateful dog waiting for her masters return. Before long she filled with rain water and aided by the well she keeled over. There she remained for the next nine years, slowly rotting away.

I happened to be in Lowtown Marine when word came that Mr Wheelans widow wanted to sell Trindle. The deal was done on the spot, and Marion and myself set about righting her and pumped her out. Brian O'Reilly then lifted Trindle out with his crane and we set about the job of restoring her.

N.B. Mr Whelan had a young son called Tommy, he nicked named him 'Tommy Trindle' after a cartoon character. He subsequently called his boat 'Trindle'
